Don’t “Fall” Behind On Your Automotive Maintenance

It’s hard to believe that it is already September, but as the days get cooler it is important to remember to get your vehicle ready for the colder Wisconsin weather. Here at Heiser we are dedicated to giving you the best service throughout all the seasons. It is important to remember that regular, routine maintenance can help improve your gasoline mileage, reduce pollution, and catch minor problems before they become big headaches. Here are some great tips to make sure you don’t “fall” behind on your automotive maintenance.

First things first, remember to read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules.

ENGINE PERFORMANCE:
Get engine drivability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at by a certified Heiser technician. Cold weather makes existing problems worse. Replace dirty filters too.  A poorly running engine is less efficient and burns more gasoline.

OIL:
Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual—more often if you drive in mostly stop-and-go traffic or if you have consistent frequent short trips.  Regular oil and filter changes are one of the most frequently neglected services, yet it is one that is essential to protect your engine.

COOLING SYSTEM:
The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically.

HEATER/DEFROSTER:
The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility. With windshield wipers make sure to replace old blades. In Wisconsin’s harsh climate, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up

BATTERY:
The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Here at Heiser we offer battery services that will help make sure the terminals are clean, that the connection is tight, and that you have the best possible charge.

LIGHTS:
It is important to inspect all lights and bulbs and replace burned out bulbs right away. At ever Heiser service, our certified Service Advisors will check to make sure all lights are in working order.

TIRES:
Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping as well as check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. It is important to check tire pressure once a month too. Let the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure. Also, don’t forget to check your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition. Under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels makes your engine work harder and thus use excess gasoline. Finally, have your brakes checked periodically for safety and to prevent costly repairs that can be caused by neglect. Don’t forget to advantage of our Heiser’s “Cost Plus Tire Program.” All tire purchases include a lifetime of tire rotations and nitro filled tires.  Click here to learn more about the program.
